Change in employment transition and depressive symptoms in later life£ºTest of moderating effects of volunteering

Abstract
The present study aims to examine associations between transitions in paid work status,volunteering, and depressive symptoms among older Koreans focusing on moderating effects ofvolunteering. Data were from 9,781 respondents who participated in 2008 and 2011 Survey ofLiving Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons. Results from regression modelsindicated that first, compared to respondents who were continuously not employed those whostarted working or were continuously working showed reduced depressive symptoms, while thosewho stopped working revealed increased depressive symptoms. Secondly, respondents whoparticipated in volunteering in either 2008 or 2011 showed decreased depressive symptomscompared to their never volunteered counterparts. A significant interaction between changes andpaid work and volunteering observed. Specifically, respondents who were continuously workingshowed greater depressive symptoms then the continuously not working counterparts amongrespondents who stopped volunteering. Implications on productive aging programs and theoryapplication were discussed
